Character Management

Create character bibles, define traits and arcs, map relationships, and reference characters while writing.

Character Library

The Character Library is where you manage all the characters in your series. Access it from within a series via the Characters tab, or navigate directly to the library page.

Creating a Character

  1. Open a series and go to the Characters tab, or navigate to the full Character Library
  2. Click New Character (or Add Character from the tab view)
  3. Fill in:
    • Name — The character’s display name
    • Role — Choose from Protagonist, Antagonist, Supporting, or Minor
    • Description — Optional backstory or overview
  4. Click Create Character

Each character is assigned a color accent based on their role for quick visual scanning:

Role Color
Protagonist Tertiary (orange)
Antagonist Error (red)
Supporting Info (blue)
Minor Secondary (grey)

Filtering and Searching

  • Role filter tabs at the top let you narrow by Protagonist, Antagonist, Supporting, or Minor
  • Search filters by name, description, and personality/physical traits
  • Character counts are shown in each filter tab

Merging Characters

If you’ve accidentally created a duplicate, use Merge mode:

  1. Click the Merge button in the library header
  2. Click the first character to set it as the Source (will be deleted)
  3. Click the second character to set it as the Target (will be kept)
  4. Confirm the merge — the source character’s name will be replaced with the target’s name across all pages

Character Profile

Click any character card to open their full profile page.

Profile Tab

  • Portrait & Bio — Overview with character name, role badge, biography, and traits
  • Traits — Displayed as Markdown content for rich formatting
  • Arc Progress — A visual progress bar tracking your character through four arc stages:
    • Introducing → Developing → Climax → Resolved
  • Arc Status — Shown as a badge and reflected in the progress bar
  • Arc Summary — A text field describing where the character is in their journey

Editing a Character

Click Edit on the profile to open the slide-over editor, where you can update:

  • Name, role, and description
  • Traits (Markdown supported)
  • Arc status and summary
  • Portrait image URL

References Tab

Add visual references, inspiration images, and research links for a character:

  1. Click Add Reference on the References tab
  2. Choose the type: Image Reference, Website / Link, or Document / File
  3. Provide a title, URL, and optional description
  4. References appear in a grid with type badges and delete controls on hover

Character references are auto-filtered by the character’s name within the series reference collection.

Relationships Tab

Map how characters connect:

  1. Click Add Relationship on the Relationships tab
  2. Choose a target character from the dropdown
  3. Pick a relationship type:
    • Ally, Rival, Mentor, Family, Love Interest, Nemesis, Subordinate, or Other
  4. Add an optional description of the dynamic
  5. Click Add Relationship to save

Relationships display as cards linking to the other character’s profile. You can also see a quick list of other characters in the series at the bottom of the tab.

Character Quick-Edit

From within a series detail page, the Characters tab provides an inline grid view. Each card shows:

  • Character name and role badge
  • Arc status badge (if set)
  • Personality trait chips (first 3)
  • Brief description
  • Click any card to open the full profile

Using Characters While Writing

In the Page Editor, the Character side panel lets you:

  1. Browse all characters in your series
  2. See which characters are detected in the current page’s Fountain source
  3. Click a character to jump to their profile
  4. Use Insert Dialogue to add a character’s dialogue template directly into the editor

Characters mentioned in all-caps Fountain dialogue blocks (e.g., ELIAS) are automatically detected and highlighted.
